The Election Commission of Bangladesh has been established under Article 116 of the Constitution of Bangladesh. The head of the Election Commission is called the Chief Election Commissioner.
Article 119 of the Constitution of Bangladesh describes the responsibilities of the Election Commission. The Election Commission is responsible for conducting elections to the President and Parliament, preparing voter lists for elections, redefining constituencies, conducting other elections as prescribed by law (including all local government councils such as union councils, municipalities, city corporations, upazila councils, district councils, hill councils). District Council) and proper performance of ancillary functions.
The Election Commission shall be independent in carrying out its duties and shall be subject only to this Constitution and law. It is the duty of all authorities to assist the Election Commission in discharging its responsibilities.
